For those who only know FFL... "regular" army has been engaged in large numbers in all french operations since forever. Actually, most of the troops posted in Africa are Marines troops aka "Colonials". Their historical mission is to deploy.

2013/02/19 : Command sergeant major Harold Vormezeele (French Foreign Legio airborne commando)

These are what the Legion would call "Schlapores", a slang name for regular French army. Derived from a German nickname for a dog with floppy ears, because some French army units have humongous berets. Doubtless some of the units currently serving in Mali were previously stationed in Chad as it is a logical stepping point strategically. Units of the legion do regular company sized rotations in 4 month increments in Chad splitting their time between N'Djemena and Abeche. But so do the French regulars. Its an on going operation called "Epervier".
