The former top enlisted airman at Air Force Materiel Command will defend himself against 20 charges that include adultery and misuse of his government position at a December court-martial.

The Air Force announced its decision Aug. 5. The case against Chief Master Sgt. William Gurney first entered public view in May with an Article 32 hearing, the military equivalent of a grand-jury proceeding.

During the hearing, 10 female airmen testified to alleged trysts with Gurney, who is married. Some said they felt pressure to continue their relationship with Gurney or hoped to gain professionally by having sex with him.

Some of the women testified that the former command chief of AFMC sent nude photos to them on his government BlackBerry, engaged in threesomes with Gurney and his wife, arranged temporary duty assignments to set up on-the-road rendezvous and tried to influence others to assign airmen with whom he was allegedly having sex to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, where Gurney served.
