A three-year-old girl has been shot dead by a boy aged four - after he picked up a handgun left on a kitchen table and pointed it at her head.

The shocking shooting happened at the children's home in Indianapolis, U.S., around noon on Thursday.
Police are now trying to trace the boy and his father Curtis J White, 24.
The girl's mother, Fiona C Lee, was arrested and held in custody late Thursday on child neglect and drug charges. White lived with Lee in the home in North Sheffield Avenue.

The girl, Aunesti Lee Allen, died at Riley Hospital for Children a few hours after the shooting.
Police said the boy may have thought the gun was a toy, as many toy guns were lying around the house.

Lieutenant Jeff Duhamell, from Indianapolis Police Department, said: 'The boy picked up the gun, pointed it at her head and pulled the trigger.'The .45-claibre handgun was on a side table in the kitchen, within easy reach of any of the kids.
'This is a tragedy that easily could have been avoided. And the sad part is that the other children saw it. Now, there are many lives that have been turned upside down.'
Police have not found White or his son.

Shrine: Distraught friends and neighbours have left toys at the scene of the shooting, while the girl's mother, Fiona C Lee, has been arrested for neglect

The father was not at the home at the time but came shortly afterward and accompanied Lee and her children to the hospital.
But he left the hospital before police could talk to him.

Lee's other two children saw the shooting. Police said the frightened children ran to a neighbour's house.

Detectives said they do not know the intent of the boy who pulled the trigger.

Duhamell said the mother admitted it was her handgun and knows she made a terrible mistake. Her children are under the care of her mother.

Hopefully she gets the death penalty, so she won't have a chance in hell to ruin
another child's life.

This is why you should be trained in fire arm safety before you can purchase a weapon.

Well she's held on drug charges in addition to child neglect, chances are it was an illegal weapon.

I was thinking the same thing, but my inner PC was yelling at me.

First off why would you leave a handgun laying around. Blame the parents on this one.

Protip: Always keep weapon on safety when you don't intend to shoot it. Safety your weapon after shooting.
Protip: Keep magazines seperate, locked away from your weapon while it's in your house.
Protip: Don't keep your weapon anywhere where a child could reach it.

Come on, my dad taught me all of these rules when I was 10 years old. People are so ignorant, especially when it comes to firearms. I don't even keep my magazines loaded when I'm not at the range. =/
