The man accused of masterminding a deadly car bomb in a Mexican border city last week had been arrested, charged and then released in the death of a medic assigned to Holloman Air Force Base, N.M.

Jesus Armando Acosta Guerrero, believed to be a top leader in the Juarez drug cartel, had been detained in connection with the Nov. 4 nightclub attack, also in the town of Ciudad Juarez, that killed Staff Sgt. David Booher and five others, according to the El Paso Times.

Booher, assigned to the 49th Fighter Wing, had been visiting family in the area.

Federal Police, the uniformed federal police of Mexico, could not say when or why Acosta Guerrero was arrested for the nightclub attack, only that he was released shortly later.

Retaliation for Acosta Guerrero’s arrest came early July 15 when the car bomb went off, killing three and injuring 20. Federal Police believe the attack is the first car bombing used in Mexico’s cartel wars.

Airmen from 12th Air Force, which includes Booher's unit, are banned from traveling to Chihuahua state because of the violence. Holloman is about 90 miles from the border.
