The Kane County State’s Attorney’s office has created a special task force to investigate an incident that involved a 17-year-old boy jumping out of a moving SUV last week.

Kane County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the vicinity of Old Homestead and Mallard Lake roads in unincorporated St. Charles Township on Friday about 10:20 p.m. for reports of a teen who jumped from a moving vehicle, according to a release from the state’s attorney’s office.

When deputies arrived, they found a teenage boy lying on his back, a puddle of blood surrounding the back of his head, a police report said. He was also bleeding from his inner right ear.

There were two cars parked at the scene, but a group of girls in a silver Dodge Durango left shortly after sheriff's deputies arrived, the report said. The deputy asked the boys on the scene to call the girls and tell them to return, which they did.

The girl driving the Durango told deputies a "group of friends" was involved in a scavenger hunt where one of the tasks was to jump from a moving vehicle at 25 mph. She said she and others thought 25 mph was too fast, and planned to take a picture of the speedometer at 25 mph before slowing the car to 10-15 mph.

The boy who jumped, she said, left the vehicle "without giving her any notice," the report said.

The girl said none of the teens was drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs. All are students at St. Charles North High School. The deputy had each teen call a parent and tell them to meet their child at Delnor-Community Hospital.

The injured teen was unresponsive when he was taken to Delnor-Community in critical condition. He was on life support after the incident, the police report said.
The state’s attorney will seek a special grand jury to hear evidence and determine what crimes, if any, were committed and what charges would be appropriate, the release said.
