EL CENTRO, Calif. — The editor of the Imperial Valley Press has apologized for an editorial cartoon that critics said mocked a Congressional candidate who lost an eye in Iraq.
The cartoon, published July 10, showed a poster of Nick Popaditch wearing an eye patch while two skateboarders debate whether it depicts a James Bond villain, a pirate or TV’s Uncle Fester.
Popaditch, a former Marine sergeant, was wounded in 2004. The Republican is battling Democratic incumbent Bob Filner in the 51st Congressional District.
Editor Brad Jennings apologized to Popaditch in a phone call Monday and ran a printed apology Tuesday. He said the cartoon was meant to show that voters are ill-informed.
Filner said the cartoon was in poor taste. Popaditch said the cartoon didn’t bother him but he was concerned it might upset other wounded vets.
