The final moments of gunman Raoul Moat were last night revealed in chilling detail by his best friend – the man police sent in to persuade Moat to give himself up.
The Sunday Mirror can reveal that Moat, finally cornered, let out a blood-curdling scream BEFORE he unloaded a shotgun into his brain.
Last night there was mounting speculation that he may have pulled the trigger because he had been blasted by TWO 50,000-volt Taser stun-guns fired by police. If the Tasers did lead to Moat’s suicide, officers will face claims that they bungled the vital final stages of the six-hour stand-off.
Last night there were reports that some officers were within 2ft of him as he was Tasered, having crept closer as negotiators kept him talking.
Police had cornered Moat after chasing him through Rothbury, Northumberland, at 7.30pm on Friday.
Locals spotted the fugitive running through the village, heading east and he was quickly surrounded by armed officers, close to a primary school’s tennis courts.
We can also reveal that police had rushed Moat’s best friend Anthony Wright to talk Moat into giving himself up.
But Anthony said last night: “They got me there too late. I could have talked him round. I’m sure those Tasers led to his death.”
Anthony said he was phoned yesterday afternoon – around 12 hours after Moat’s death – by a policewoman who told him: “I am really sorry... I had no idea that anyone had used a Taser.
“Last night we all assumed he had shot himself of his own accord, but it now looks like the Taser may have caused him to do it.”
Controversially, police have refused to say:
when they fired the Tasers.
why they were fired.
if it was a mistake or intentional.
whether the Tasers actually hit Moat, a father of three.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission has begun an inquiry into Northumbria Police’s handling of the Moat case since he was released from jail 10 days ago.
The use of Tasers is now expected to figure prominently.
Audio recordings picked up the sound of his wailing seconds before the shot – indicating he may have been zapped by a stun-gun and then pulled the trigger, possibly in an involuntary muscle spasm caused by the shock.
Anthony insisted: “When I got there the police said he was calm and they had the situation under control. They expected to be talking to him all night and maybe into the next day. The negotiator was a real professional and he was stunned that Raoul killed himself.

“Why did it go from preparing me to speaking to him to him shooting himself? Something must have triggered it – and I’m sure it was the fact they shocked him.
