HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (NNS) -- The multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) pulled into Halifax, Nova Scotia, June 25 to celebrate the Canadian Naval Centennial and International Fleet Review (IFR) week June 28 to July 2.

The weeklong event will focus on building and strengthening an appreciation for the Canadian Navy and promoting the role of the service within the Canadian Forces.

More than 30 ships from Canada, Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and the United States have steamed into the historic port of Halifax to celebrate the centennial and participate in the fleet review.

The Queen of England, Elizabeth II, will head the IFR, reviewing the multinational fleet at anchor in Halifax Harbor June 29.

Wasp Sailors and Marines, including embarked Carrier Strike Group 2, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 22 and 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines will be involved in various events during the visit meant to strengthen the relationship between Canada and its allies. Events include competitive sporting events, cultural observances, open tours aboard foreign navy vessels, and a traditional Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo Parade.
