The fast-attack submarine Philadelphia will be decommissioned Friday, the 33rd anniversary of its commissioning.

The third in the Los Angeles class and the sixth ship to bear the name, Philadelphia finished strong. The sub completed its 16th and final deployment Feb. 3 when it returned to Naval Submarine Base New London, Conn. The sub’s crews earned seven Battle Es during service that spanned six presidents.

“It is quite an honor,” Cmdr. John Spencer, Philadelphia’s commanding officer said in a Navy release at the sub’s final homecoming. “The submarine’s keel was laid in 1972 when I was 4 years old. I’d say 90 percent of the crew wasn’t even born when this submarine was built. It’s been a part of the Groton community the entire time, so it is a tremendous honor. For the hundreds and hundreds of men who’ve served on this submarine, it is great to be a part of that.”

Cmdr. Dave Soldow took command of Philadelphia on April 23, to see the sub through its decommissioning. Spencer became deputy commander of Submarine Squadron 8 in Norfolk, Va.
