• According to a spokesman of the U.S. Army in Heidelberg in 2000 to the 6500 U.S. soldiers stationed in Mannheim and Heidelberg, will be transferred to Wiesbaden.
• 500 go to Schweinfurt (Bayern ), 300 and 150 to Kaiserslautern to Baumholder (both Rheinland -Pfalz) . 1450 U.S. soldiers are to leave Germany.
In Wiesbaden currently building a new U.S. headquarters will be built. The former headquarters of the Army in Heidelberg is given up for it. The empty barracks are returned to the federal government , as the U.S. spokesman said.
The building should be finished end of February 2012 and provides space for more than 1,000 jobs and cutting-edge electronics. From there, the U.S. military control military operations.
Heidelberg and Mannheim had tried for months to secure their sites.
For talks with the U.S. Department were the mayor Eckart Würzner (independent) and Peter Short ( SPD) traveled to Washington a year ago , as Baden- Wuerttemberg Interior Minister Heribert Rech ( CDU).

End of an Era, sad.

From what I've heard Germany doesn't really want us there anymore. We need our troops in the US more than Germany does, IMO.

Really sad. I lived at Benjamin Franklin Village, Mannheim in the 80's.

The bases needed to be closed in all reality. The US needs them more. Germany is well more than capable of holding her own.

I mean since the berlin wall has come down and the russkies have gone home :)
Whats the need for you guys to be in Germany anyways, its just a dragg of man power which can be used better on other hotspots.

It was however probably a nice cushy place to spend your deployment :) nice beer nice girls nice country - Ahhh germany how I miss you :)
