ANDREWS AIR (http://cgi.wn.com/?t=airbases/index.txt) FORCE BASE, Md. — A string of setbacks for al-Qaida's affiliate in Iraq (http://iraqdaily.com/) has left the insurgent group (http://groups.com/) "devastated" and struggling to cope with a double whammy of a leadership vacuum and a money (http://wnmoney.com/) squeeze, the top U.S. military (http://defencedaily.com/) officer said Sunday. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,

Hello on this Tuesday, the first day of May 2007. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline update. There are unconfirmed reports that al Qaeda's leader in Iraq has been killed. Local tribes claim Abu Ayyub al-Masri was slain in clashes with rival militant groups north of Baghdad. The Iraqi government says it cannot confirm the leader's death until it makes an identification of the body. Al-Masri succeeded Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as al Qaeda's leader in that country after he was killed in a US airstrike in June. President Bush is expected to veto the Iraq war-funding bill today that contains a troop withdrawal date. Yesterday, Bush said he wants to work with Democrats to create a bill that doesn't set artificial timetables and gets money to the troops. The $124 billion spending bill passed last week funds military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan but also calls for all US forces to be out of Iraq by March 2008. British government officials have announced that there will be no new investigation into the 2005 London terrorist bombings. There are suggestions the attack was paired with a previous terror plot. Some politicians have called for an independent inquiry into this link. But the British Home Secretary rejects those claims and says a public inquiry would divert the energies of police who are already stretched. US food agencies say tainted wheat gluten from China was used in manufacturing chicken feed sold in Indiana. All of the chickens that ate that food have since been ...

Al Qaida's number 2 Ayman Al-Zawahiri released a statement yesterday adressing president elect Barack Obama. He called him a "house negro" and said he represents the opposite of the honorable black american. Obama's popularity with the terrorist organization seems to be in all time low, on contrary to what some news stations claimed. BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The US military on Wednesday announced the arrest of a senior leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, an insurgent who, the military said, is casting himself as a "conduit" between the top leaders of al Qaeda and al Qaeda in Iraq. Khalid al-Mashadani, an Iraqi also known as Abu Shahed, was seized on July 4 in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul and is in coalition custody, the military said. "He served as the al Qaeda media emir for Baghdad and then was appointed the media emir for all of Iraq," said Brig. Gen. Kevin J. Bergner, Multi-National Force-Iraq spokesman, who briefed reporters. He is believed to be the most senior Iraqi in al Qaeda in Iraq. During interrogations, al-Mashadani shed light on the workings of al Qaeda in Iraq and its connection with al Qaeda outside of Iraq, Bergner said. Don't Miss Report: Al Qaeda renewing efforts to sneak terror plotters into US He said al-Mashadani is a close associate of al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri and served as an "intermediary" between al-Masri, al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, the second-in-command of al Qaeda. "In fact, communication between senior al Qaeda leadership and al-Masri frequently went through al-Mashadani," Bergner said. Bergner said al-Mashadani co-founded an organization "in cyberspace" called the Islamic State of Iraq, which he referred to as a "marketing" effort to create a Taliban-like state in Iraq. Despite significant improvement in Iraqs security over the last year, violent attacks still shatter any notion that Iraq has become a peaceful place, as they did again on Thursday with two suicide bombings that killed at least 78 people. But officials are hopeful that another event on Thursday may help reduce the violence — the reported arrest by Iraqi security officials of one of the most wanted leaders of the al-Qaeda-linked Sunni insurgency. Abu Omar al-Baghdadi was for years a key target of Iraqi and American forces. Michael Wahid Hanna, an expert on international security matters with the Century Foundation, joins Martin Savidge to discuss the significance of the capture and what it will mean for Iraqs Sunni insurgency, as well as the increase in bombings in Iraq.

www.timesofearth.com (http://www.timesofearth.com) US officials say they believe he was killed recently in the tribal areas of Pakistan in an American drone attack. WASHINGTON — The US government has said that it killed Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, an Egyptian man described as al-Qaeda's "number three" official. Al-Qaeda confirmed al-Yazid's death in a message posted on internet forums on Monday. The message contains no details about his death, but US officials believe al-Yazid, also known as Sheikh Sa'id al-Masri, was killed in northwest Pakistan last month. "We have strong reason to believe ... that al-Masri was killed recently in Pakistan's tribal areas," a US counter-terrorism official told the Reuters news agency. Al-Yazid was a longtime member of al-Qaeda and was described by a US official as being the organisations "chief operating officer". The US government also alleged that he helped to funnel money to some of the September 11 hijackers. Al-Yazid headed al-Qaeda's Afghanistan branch for several years, and reportedly ran many of the group's operations in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. "He was also the organisation's prime conduit to bin Laden and Zawahiri," the US official said, referring to al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri. The al-Qaeda message said that al-Yazid's wife, and several other family members, were killed along with him. Al-Yazid was a former member of Egypt's Islamic Jihad organisation and spent time in prison after Anwar Sadat, the former Egyptian ...

Back in April, the seeds of the smear campaign against Senator Obama were being planted. What now has become "palling around with terrorists" began in April, when John McCain and his campaign started dropping the talking points that Barack Obama was the choice of Hamas, as if Obama had sought that statement of support. In response to reporters' questions as to whether McCain stood by a fundraising letter which made the point, McCain said, "All I can tell you... is that I think it's very clear who Hamas wants to be the next president of the United States. So apparently has Danny Ortega and several others. I think that people should understand that I will be Hamas's worst nightmare....If Senator Obama is favored by Hamas, I think people can make judgments accordingly." Right wing blogs went nuts. RightWingNews blared the headline, "Hamas Endorses Obama? Can Hizbollah And Al-Qaeda Be Far Behind?" Well, yes, al Qaeda wasn't far behind. Today, they expressed a preference for Senator McCain. To revise what Senator McCain said above, "If Senator McCain is favored by al Qaeda, I think people can make judgments accordingly..." In a message on an al Qaeda website, terrorists wrote of continuing the war in Iraq, "This requires presence of an impetuous American leader such as McCain, who pledged to continue the war till the last American soldier," the message said. "Then, al-Qaida will have to support McCain in the coming elections so that he continues the failing march of his ...
