A benefit cheat from Stafford, who was paid more than £30,000 in fraudulent claims, has been told she will have to pay back the cash over the next 67 years.
Sabrina Mwangi, aged 33, would not clear her debt to the taxpayer until after she celebrated her 100th birthday.
She was given a suspended prison sentence by a crown court judge last week for cheating the system out of a total of £34,000, which she has been told she will now have to pay back at a rate of £9.75 a week.
This will be deducted directly from her benefits, meaning she would be past 100 before she paid all the cash back – which, in reality, may mean the full amount is never recouped.
Now, council bosses in Stafford are using the judgment to issue a stark warning to anyone thinking of conning the taxpayer that they will be pursued and will have to pay back any cash they have claimed.
Mrs Mwangi, formally Sabrina Williams, is a mother of four and claimed she was living alone to get income support, housing and council tax benefit.
But at the time she shared her Pitt Street house in Stafford with Denis Mwangi. The couple married in 2008 and she now lives in Nottingham.
She pleaded guilty to two charges relating to obtaining benefits by failing to notify changes to her circumstances between March 2006 and October 2008 and was given a six months prison sentence suspended for 18 months and ordered to do 120 hours’ unpaid work.
Defending Mwangi, Nicola Hornby, said her client was worried if her husband left she would have no money.
Investigators from the borough council revealed they had seven cases of benefit fraud coming before the courts over the next few months.
Nationally it is estimated that £44 million is claimed fraudulently from local government and last year the Stafford council uncovered £155,741.41 of housing and council tax payments being claimed by people
