MUMBAI: Following critical remarks made by Special Court judge M.L. Tahilyani against several police officers of the Azad Maidan police station recently, Mumbai police commissioner D. Shivanandan said on Saturday that "coward" policemen who are accused of fleeing their posts during the Nov. 26, 2008 Mumbai terror attacks would be punished and strict action would be taken against them.

173 people died in the attacks, which India blames on Pakistan-based militants. Earlier this month the lone surviving gunman, Mohammed Ajmal Amir Qasab, was sentenced to death.
Police inspector Yeshwant Thoravade, police sub inspector A.R. Shelke, officer S.D. Uttekar, C.D. Rathod, Suresh Kadam and Gavade are accused of fleeing their posts during a heavy exchange of fire with militants.
In his rebuke, Tahilyani noted that when Additional Commissioner of Police Sadanand Date was engaged in a firefight with the militants at the Cama Hospital, the accused policemen cowardly fled from the scene.

“The Azad Maidan policemen stood as mute spectators when the terrorists massacred innocent citizens and senior police officers Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar. The policemen reached the Cama hospital, but then fled away apprehending danger to their lives. The act of these policemen were definitely that of cowardliness and lack of devotion toward their duties,” the judge said.

A very public rebuke
