May 26 airpower summary

5/27/2010 - SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations May 26, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

Air Operations in Afghanistan

Combat-Air Support

Chahar Bagh
Coalition operators provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The operators observed enemy forces firing a weapon at friendly forces and received ground controllers' permission to engage enemy forces. They released a missile and eliminated the threat to friendly forces.

Later, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots, Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircrews and coalition aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots and aircrews conducted shows of force, one with flares launched, to stop enemy fire, deter an imminent attack against friendly forces and deter enemy activity in the area. The shows of force were determined successful by ground controllers.

Ghazni
Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews and Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly-forces convoys that encountered improvised explosive devices. The friendly forces reported taking harassing enemy fire while waiting on medevac units so aircrews and pilots conducted shows of presence and shows of force to deter enemy action. The medevac operation was successful and the convoys continued when no further enemy action was noted.

Morghab
Coalition aircrews and F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces convoy, friendly dismounted patrol and area reconnaissance for suspicious activity. The aircrews conducted a shows of presence and shows of force to deter enemy activity. Coalition aircrews released a precision-guided munition against an enemy position firing on friendly forces. Ground controllers declared the actions successful when enemy fire ceased.

Konduz
F-15-E aircrews provided armed overwatch and close-air support for a friendly-forces convoy. When the convoy reported taking enemy fire, the enemy fighting position was marked and aircrews conducted multiple strafing runs. Later, a show of force was conducted, with flares launched to deter enemy action. Ground controllers declared the actions successful.

Asmar
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly-forces convoy. The aircrews conducted a show of presence to reassure ground forces air power was overhead, which ground controllers declared successful.

Sheykhabad
Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of presence, which ground controllers determined successful.

Soltani
An Air Force B-1B Lancer aircrew provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrew conducted a show of force to intimidate and deter enemy forces activity during a friendly forces exfiltration. Ground controllers reported the action successful.

Ghecko
A-10 pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted a show of force to deter enemy small-arms fire. The show of force was determined successful by coalition and joint terminal attack controllers.

Airlift Action

Badghis
An Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew flew a low-cost, low-altitude airdrop in Badghis Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 1,200 pounds of supplies to friendly forces.
