Army Vet, 80, Shoots And Kills Armed Burglar

Windsor Genova - AHN News News Writer

Chicago, IL, United States (AHN) - An 80-year-old Army veteran and a 29-year-old armed burglar figured in a shootout inside the vet's home in Chicago’s West Side.

The burglar ended up dead after he shot at, but missed the old man, who fired back and did not miss.

The Korean War veteran, whose name was not revealed, was with his 83-year-old wife, 57-year-old son and 12-year-old great grandson when the break-in and shooting occurred at 5:22 a.m. inside the family’s two-flat in East Garfield Park.

Police questioned the veteran but released him without any charges.

Anthony Nelson was found dead on the scene. He was on parole for a 2009 drug conviction and lives in West Walnut, according to police.

It was the second break-in at the veteran’s home. He lost $150 to burglars in November and bought a gun to prevent a repeat of the robbery, his son said.
