5/19/2010 - SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan in the following operations May 18, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

Air Operations in Afghanistan

Close-Air Support

Oruzgan
Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon pilots and coalition aircrews conducted armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly patrol assisting a civic-leader engagement. When the patrol reported taking enemy fire, the enemy position was identified and coordinates passed to the F-16 pilots. One of them released a precision-guided munition against the enemy fighting position destroying it. Later, shows of force, with flares, were conducted to deter enemy fire against friendly forces. The shows of force were declared successful.

Remak
Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Aircrews conducted a show of force to deter anti-Afghan forces activity. Ground controllers declared the show of force successful.

Morghab
An Air Force B-1B Lancer aircrew provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrew released precision-guided munitions against enemy fighting positions to neutralize enemy fire. The actions were declared successful by ground controllers when enemy activity ceased.

Kandahar
Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt pilots provided armed overwatch, close air support for friendly forces and a convoy escort. The pilots conducted shows of force, with flares, to break contact with hostile forces. On-scene joint terminal attack controllers called the shows of force successful.

Tarin Kowt
A-10 pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots made a cannon-fire strafing run against an enemy sniper position to deter enemy activity. JTACs confirmed the pilot's action was successful.

Gardez
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted shows of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy fire and anti-Afghan forces activity. Ground controllers confirmed the shows of force successful when hostile contact with enemy forces was broken.

Soltani
F-16C pilots provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces dismounted patrol. The pilots conducted shows of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy fire and activity.

Lashkar Gah
Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted shows of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy activity. Ground controllers reported the shows of force as successful.

Malek Din
Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, which ground controllers determined successful.

Shurakian
F/A-18C pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted a show of force, which ground controllers determined successful.

Ali Kheyl
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted shows of force, some with flares launched, to deter anti-Afghan forces activity, which ground controllers confirmed as successful.

Ar Rutbah
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force to deter anti-Afghan forces activity. Ground controllers determined the show of force was successful.

Qal-E-Naw
A B-1 aircrew provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The aircrew conducted a show of force to deter enemy activity. Ground controllers reported the show of force as successful.

Sheykhabad
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and convoy escort. The aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to deter anti-Afghan forces activity, which ground controllers determined successful.

Airlift Action

Helmand Province
An Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Helmand Province delivering 88,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.

Paktika Province
An Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 26,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.
