he explosion occurred near the city's parliament building

The Taliban says it was behind the blast, which occurred near Darulaman palace, a derelict building that once housed Afghanistan's royal family.
"The attack, which was a suicide car bomb, was carried out by one of our mujahedeen (holy warriors)," spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed told AFP.
A senior Afghan army doctor predicted the death toll would be "very high."
"We have five bodies brought to our hospital so far... the number of the dead is more than 20, all civilians," said General Ahmad Zia Yaftali.
Foreign troops were also seen in the area following the blast.

The blast was the first major attack in the city since February

The Taliban has announced a spring offensive against government officials and foreign diplomats and troops.
President Hamid Karzai confirmed the attack had killed Nato forces and innocent civilians, including women and school children.
"I condemn this attack on strongest terms and hope that Afghanistan one day gets rid of this," he added at a news conference at the presidential palace.
The bombing was the first major attack in Kabul since February 26.
On that occasion Taliban suicide bombers killed 16 people, including Westerners and Indians, in one of the deadliest attacks on foreigners yet.

Remind me what we are doing in this country please ! We invaded in 2001 to find Bin ladan and defeat the Taliban. We failed. Then we were told that we were there to bring democracy to the country. In fact Karzai and his family, who hold power there, are amongst the most coorrupt in the world. We failed again. Finally we were told that we were there to rein in the poppy trade. Yet again our strategy failed. Now we are paying Taliban fighters to stop fighting NATO troops !! The whole thing is a complete and total disaster and will continue to be so for as long as we are in that country. If the Russians with 620.000 troops on the ground and 16000 killed could not tame this country, then 130.000 mixed NATO troops have no chance at all. We must withdraw as every invader of that country has been forced to do over the centuries and allow Afgan forces to defend their own country, whilst our soldiers defend ours.

Readers notes;

Afghanistan is not another Vietnam.

I have served there 5 times and the comparisons are totally different. What you are saying is no more than the usual media rubbish put out by people who have either never been there or have another agenda.

The majority of Afghans want peace and do not support the Taliban.

The Taliban only exist because the people are so scared of them.

Folks....Lets be very pragmatic and realistic about Afghanistan - the Taliban will NEVER be defeated or surrender.....Remember the Russians gave up after 10 yrs of trying - and the Russkies are a tough bunch of cowboys!! The Taliban are GUERRILLA fighters and they are extremely difficult to defeat...They know their terrain and their tactics!!

This is another Vietnam....especially for the yanks, as they lost 57,000 dead and many more injured in that unwinnable 12 yr. conflict!! How many more young men are we going to lose, before we ultimately have to 'Walk Away' from Afghanistan??

The headline should have really read, " Taliban kill civilians in Kabul, with scores injured in another terror attack. " This would be an accurate depiction of the Taliban. The different approaches of the Afghan Govt forces and its coalition allies in there attempts to limit violence and bring stability, are in stark contrast to the murderous sick minded group of terrorists and insurgents operating within the country.

Can we as a coalition be more powerful than, cash, AK47 and Fear.
Fanatical is a truly powerful word, that is hard to erase.
