This is something relatively new. What are the tabs on each car for?
My guess would be to keep people from trying to get between the cars. Does not look like any aerodynamic advantages to me.

Bad guess. Each car has a very heavy rubber tube on the top and sides, and they are in constant contact, so there is no way to look much less pass through.
OK...The only other use I can think of is a monitoring system to keep car sway in check. If not I'm stumped.

Maybe a way to climb to the top of the cars?
