The AK-47 (contraction of Russian: Автомат Калашникова образца 1947 года; Avtomat Kalashnikova obraztsa 1947 goda; "Kalashnikov's automatic rifle model of year 1947") is a 7.62 mm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.62x39mm) assault rifle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_rifle) developed in the Soviet Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union) by Mikhail Kalashnikov (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Kalashnikov) in two versions: the fixed stock AK-47 and the AKS-47 (S—Skladnoy priklad) variant equipped with an underfolding metal shoulder stock. Design work on the AK began in 1944. In 1946 the rifle was presented for official military trials, a year later the fixed stock version was introduced into service with select units of the Red Army (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Army) (the folding stock model was developed later). The AK-47 was officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Armed_Forces) in 1949. It is also used by the majority of the member states of the former Warsaw Pact (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warsaw_Pact). The AK-47 was also used as a basis for the development of many other types of individual and crew-served firearms. It was one of the first true assault rifles and, due to its durability and ease of use, remains the most widely used assault rifle in the world. More AK-type rifles have been produced than any other assault rifle.

The ak-47 is a decent weapon. although It has no accuracy beyond 50 yards. Also, I believe that it is a direct copy although modified of the German MP-44.

I have a MAK 90 and I can hit targets out to 300 yards on open sights with no problem.

Not even close to being a copy of the WWII German assault rifle. The AK is accurate to way more than 50 yards, is easy to operate and maintain. The AK is the DC-3, C-47 of assault rifles, and will be around longer than most of us. Still rocking and rolling.

i am sorry, but the AK is not a direct copy of the MP44. I have hit a a target over 250m with a single burst of 3-4 rounds, and have 2 shots hit the target. but the 7.62 round and the violent fucking recoil of doesnt help out. but 50 yards, nope soz buddy.

The AK the best rifle ???

NO .. far away from beeing it. Even if it can take a lot and still works with the ususal lack
of care which most of them are given.

It is still the cheapest and most often copyed and sold assault rifle. Like the Volkswagen Beetle, which
was also technical stone age.

For me (personal ) the HK G 3 (especially the "ZF" version with scope ) is the best.
followed by the G 36 ..

but I love the G 3´s raw power :-)

This is a common myth. A very very common one. It is actually the Soviet SKS which was derived from the MP-44, and then the AK was built after that.

You learn something everyday let me tell you. I just took a look at the Mp-44 and it does look similar to the AK-47. Interesting enough I just saw one of those soviet SKS at the shooting range the other day. Neat.

As far as which weapon is the best; I'm going to have to go with the M4/M16 replacements by LWRC. If you haven't heard of them yet, look em up. Sweet stuff. Just as durable as the HK416, but American made. Look around on youtube, and you can find a video of a guy firing the weapon, and going underwater, and firing again. He even reloads underwater. Pretty impressive. Oh, and it can be chambered in either 5.56, 7.62, or 6.8 SPC. Hehe.

And it can also be an upper receiver replacement kit. Thus, making it cheaper. If the military decides to use it, that's all they have to do.

I wouldn't mind firing an SKS. They're pretty sweet rifles.
