Car bombs kill five in Iraq city of Karbala

A double car-bombing has killed five people and wounded scores more in the Iraqi city of Karbala.

The bombs blew up outside a restaurant and a security checkpoint near the Imam Hussein shrine, one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam.

The blasts went off 15 minutes apart in the city, 110km (70 miles) south of the capital Baghdad.

The attacks come a day after a series of explosions in western Anbar province in which six people were killed.

The restaurant attacked on Monday was popular with Shia pilgrims making their way to the burial place of the Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

Sectarian violence has not returned to the same level of 2005-2007, but there have been several bombings in recent weeks.

One of those killed in Sunday's blasts was an official with Iyad Allawi's Iraqiya List, it was reported.

Dr Allawi's group won a narrow victory in the 7 March general election.
