Sean Penn defends Hugo Chávez

The Venezuelan leader, Hugo Chávez, has not had things all his own way recently, but at least he has famous friends

Falling oil prices and some significant losses in recent elections may have delivered blows to Hugo Chávez's self-styled socialist revolution, but he can still count on the support of Sean Penn.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrvRpIokeAg&feature=player_embedded

In the video above, the actor defends the democratically elected Chávez against US allegations of dictatorship and voices concerns that America is "becoming increasingly gullible to the demonising of foreign states or leaders".

The video includes clips of commentators on Fox News variously describing Chávez as an "economic terrorist" and (horror of horrors) "a socialist".

In an article accompanying the video on the Nation, in which Penn also talks about his meeting with another US bogeyman, the Cuban leader Raul Castro, he writes:

It's true, Chávez may not be a good man. But he may well be a great one.

Penn, a renowned liberal (and we all now how that word goes down in the US), will no doubt attract the ire of rightwing commentators (in this 2007 interview on Fox News, a New York councilman is called a "son of a bitch" by a reporter for defending Chávez, after 7mins 22s), but his support illustrates how the Venezuelan leader polarises opinion.

The Russian president, Dimitry Medvedev, is the latest leader of a state on not exactly friendly terms with the US to reach out to the Venezuelan president. He is due to arrive in Caracas today.

According to Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty, "the unstated reason he is in Venezuela now is that both he and Chávez want to express defiance to the United States".

Supporters credit Chávez with increasing access to education and healthcare and trying to improve the lot of the impoverished majority.

But the CIA website lists concerns such as "a weakening of democratic institutions, political polarization, a politicized military, drug-related violence along the Colombian border, increasing internal drug consumption, overdependence on the petroleum industry with its price fluctuations, and irresponsible mining operations that are endangering the rainforest and indigenous peoples".

Is Chávez a "great man", or is he the demon portrayed by the US? Or is the truth rather more mundane: that he lies somewhere between the two extremes?

If we are so bad and Chavez is so good, he should move down there and see how things work out for him. Let's see if he has people pampering his ass every day and paying him millions to play dress up for a living. These mamalukes love ripping on this country when they are in foreign lands, yet they know where to go when they want to make their money (damn capitalism huh?) while having the luxury of living in the confines of a stable and free country (damn democracy huh?).

Leave the country if you don't like it here. Move to Europe or South America. They can have you since they just love your anti-American sentiments and you just love their way of doing things. It's a perfect match. Have fun and take care.

The reason these ignorant jackasses can act like this is we allow it. Penn is not the first one nor will he be the last.

Glover was one of the first to lick Chavez's ballsack and spit the juice on America, but we kept on buying tickets for his movies.

Then you have the closet homo Depp stating he no longer wanted to live in the facist America, so he moved to France. We paid him $40 million for his last movie to just to have him spit on us.

Treason is another issue I see with all of this. Evenly strictly defined, some of what these jokers have said and done should be criminal.

But regardless, until we have had enough of these hollywood assholes spitting on our country, beliefs, faith etc and stop supporting them, they will continue to act as if they are the only ones smart enough to know what this country should do. I for one love my country and refuse to support any of these jokers with one cent of my money. And after penns rectal cancer comment, I pray it is what he dies from and dies from soon. Him and all his leftist cronies.

After reading Eric's first post I came in here to slam Penn and most of Hollywood but you guy's have said it all. There are but a few Hollywood types(pukes) I have any respect for and Gary Sinice is at the top of my list. Here are some of his activities for the USO http://www.uso.org/usoonpatrol/article_sinise-one-helping-thousands.html

Do you know what the scary thing is when it comes to the Penn/Chavez relationship? It's not even about hating Bush. It doesn't matter if it's Bush or Obama in office, this dope actually believes that Chavez is a good guy.

And then we have the equally clueless Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket). Being a Greg Gutfeld fan (Red Eye), I give you the modern day Matthew Modine...

TUESDAY'S GREGALOGUE: NICE PEOPLE ARE DANGEROUS

The great thing about a-holes, is you can see them coming. Whether it's Sean Penn or Jeanine Garafalo calling you a racist or wishing you dead - their essential douchebaggery makes them easy to spot and harmless. Their inanities should only generate guffaws, not concern.

I wish I could say that about nice people.

See, nice people are worse.

Case in point: Matthew Modine.

He's a nice guy. Pleasant, in a puppy dog sort of way. I loved him in Vision Quest.

But he's also clueless. Dangerously so. And when you combine congeniality with congenital cluelessness, you have a recipe for carnage.

This is what he had to say, on an interview on CNN.

"Imagine if somebody were to really sit down with Osama Bin Ladin and say, 'listen man, what is it that you're so angry at me about that you're willing to have people strap bombs to themselves, or get inside of airplanes and fly them into buildings.' That would be the miracle if we can get, sit down and talk to our enemies and find a way for them to hear us."

Modine just turned 51, but his opinion reflects that of a six year old girl, as well as some folks in our government too (see Iran). It's a perspective that suggests one has never contemplated evil beyond a character portrayed in a script. MM fails to realize that there are people out there who see your desire for "understanding" as one reason why you'll be killed first. Osama thinks: I'll shoot you first, cuz you're spineless.

And also, you were in Cutthroat Island.

When faced with an "us vs. them," mentality- in which the choice for our enemies is either death or glory: history suggests there's only one way to respond. And it's not with back rubs ( much to my sadness). It's annihilation until surrender. It's an ugly thing. But when you consider the alternative - subservience under a new caliphate - it's pretty much all we have.

And if you disagree with me, you're probably a racist extremist homophobe who eats poor children.

Being surprised that Rudy Giuliani supports the Yankees is akin to amazement that a socialist would defend a socialist.

Commenting on war movies misses the point too.....as all war movies are anti-war, at some level.

He's got it but sometimes words said by those whom have influence need to watch what they say. Backing a dictator who hates America and capitalists all over the world is very very treacherous and damn near treason. Free speech can only go so far. You know it and I know it. We can not go around touting the greatness of the Nazi's, Pol Pots, Vietminh of the world without consequences. Either legal or physical repercussions will happen.

By their fruits ye shall know them.

Folks like Penn and others of the Celebrity Left are free to demonstrate their ignorance and their venality to their hearts' content. I'd rather see and hear these fools up front and honest in their foolishness. It helps me as a consumer of entertainment make better purchasing decisions.

People like Penn and Glover are walking a fine line in my opinion and I have the "freedom" to call them complete jagoffs.

The irony of it all? If those two were actually born in some of the countries they support and they decided to speak out against those governments, they would have "disappeared" a long time ago.

Jon Voight is cool as shit. He's speaking on behalf of the Tea Party Movement and since I'm a T.P. Organizer, I give kudos to the Honorable Mr. Voight. There's a few Hollywoodcocks out there on our side, not many, but a few. Tom Selleck is another 'good guy.'
