Communist Rebels Reeling
February 11, 2010: Peace talks with the MILF continue to be stalled over the issue of how many Christians would end up living in territory ruled by Moslems. Meanwhile, the campaign to crush the NPA once and for all (or something close to that) continues to make progress. Fighting is increasing as police and troops move into areas where the NPA are strong, and largely left alone. The NPA is feeling the heat, and fighting back hard. It's a battle for survival.
February 7, 2010: On Masbate island, NPA rebels killed an off duty militiaman, and bombed equipment of a construction company that wound not make extortion payments.

February 6, 2010: Outside the capital, police arrested 43 suspected NPA members, along with weapons and bomb making materials. Other leftist groups insisted those arrested were health workers, and the police planted the weapons to cover their error. In the south, an NPA rebel was killed in a clash with troops.

February 4, 2010: Several hundred police and Scout Rangers on Masbate island, have put the local NPA on the defensive. The additional security forces are using the new gun control laws to track down criminals, as well as the leftist rebels. Further south, two senior NPA rebels were arrested at a checkpoint. This makes three senior NPA leaders caught in the last week, and dozens of lower ranking members killed or captured.

February 1, 2010: On Basilan, an army truck hit a road mine, killing one soldier and wounding eight.

January 31, 2010: In two clashes with the NPA, five soldiers were killed and ten wounded.

January 29, 2010: In the east, a soldier and NPA rebel were killed in a clash.
