FORT WORTH, Texas — The remains of a Texas soldier killed in Vietnam have been returned to his family after more than four decades.

Army Spc. Lawrence L. Aldrich disappeared in 1968 when he and two fellow soldiers were battling enemy forces in South Vietnam. The three were killed by a bomb that inadvertently landed in their area, according to the Department of Defense.

Aldrich was 20 and had been in Vietnam less than a year, according to his family.

While the other two soldiers’ bodies were found, Aldrich remained missing for decades despite several investigations for missing troops by U.S. and Vietnamese teams.

Finally, Aldrich’s remains were found after an excavation last year and were returned to Texas earlier this week.

Aldrich is to be buried in Fort Worth on Jan. 30.
