Obama, GOP at odds over Afghan troop increase

Bipartisan agreement on a new Afghanistan strategy will be hard to achieve for President Barack Obama, who faces a decision about whether to approve a recommendation to send 40,000 more U.S. troops into the theater in an effort to improve security.

With signs that Obama and his advisers are looking for a different option with a much more modest troop increase, key Republicans in Congress don’t seem willing to accept anything less than a plus-up of 40,000.

House Republican Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., said Wednesday that Republicans are “ready to support” Obama “if he makes the right decision.”

That, he said, would be the troop increase recommended by Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan.

“We believe very strongly that is the best way to ensure we do everything we can to succeed in that region, to make sure that terrorists, al-Qaida, its allies, do not have a strong hold, do not have a base to launch attacks against the United States or our allies,” Cantor said.

His comments follow a Tuesday meeting between Obama and key lawmakers that achieved no consensus. The only substantial result of the meeting was a White House statement that Obama is not considering a reduction in U.S. troop levels and continues to look at options.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the meeting was “very productive,” even if not decisive.

“I am impressed by the vigorous and open discussions under way in the White House, which are drawing upon the expertise of the entire national security team, including our military commanders, Pentagon leaders, and civilian and intelligence officials,” Reid said.

Reid urged colleagues to give the White House time to consider its next step.

“With the lives of so many service members from Nevada and across America on the line in Afghanistan, now is not the time to rush the process or force the president’s hand,” Reid said.

I really don't understand why nothing is being done. This is extremely irritating. I'm sure the commanders on the ground feel the same way.

What options? Bidens idea? Yeah, right... This is utterly stupid, and somewhat embarrassing. Everyone knows what needs to be done, but no one is making it happen. Why? Obama needs to be responding to IMPORTANT issues, not Kanye West at the VMAs, or the Olympics in Chicago. He needs to be focused on THIS. The Taliban morale is getting stronger because of this. Because right now they think that they can just wait it out, and wait for us to leave. He needs to listen to his commanders and let them fight the war. If we expect to win, we need to pummel these scumbags into the dirt, and not let up. We need to put more pressure on Pakistan to tighten up on their end, and then we have to do the same.

So....Obama does not agree with the recommendations of his fist General. Now he will not listen to Gen. McChrystal. So looking for opinions until he finds one he likes seems to be his plan. Instead of listening to the guys that have been doing this for years. I heard an old saying that fits these politicians very well "While old men talk, young men die." They need to get off their ass and do as Ghost said and start pummeling.

Obama's lack of decision making is disheartening troops who up to this point had a clear objective. Now they are stuck in an ever increasing muddy fight that is losing support from home(US and her Allies). I see his quick to action on bailouts of banks, auto industry, wall street, and Obamacare but his indecision on this ONE area! If there is one thing you can credit Bush Jr is this one thing. You knew where he stood on a subject. Obama is trying too hard to please the left and right. If he HAS ANY COMMON SENSE. He would sit down and meet with the TOP COMMANDER in AFGHANISTAN! 1 day in 70 days is not good. LBJ meet Wes Mooreland on many occasions but still made bad choices. That is okay he made an effort (although weak one) to come up with a plan of action.
Obama fired the last general and put in Gen. McChrystal. He did this so he could have an inside man to work over or so he thought. Gen McChrystal is one dedicaded warrior and is the man who lead SOF in Iraq and has the best understanding of how to win.
One can only pray for the sake of the world that Obama does the right thing and chose to back HIS General. Other wise this will end messy for all sides invalved.
