PARIS — A French armed forces spokesman says that one of its military vessels was fired at by Somali pirates who apparently mistook it for a commercial boat. The vessel gave chase and captured five suspected pirates.

Rear Adm. Christophe Prazuck says that pirates in skiffs fired their Kalashnikov rifles at La Somme, a military refueling ship, early Wednesday. No one was injured. The vessel gave chase, capturing and holding five suspected pirates in one of the skiffs.

France is a key member the European Union’s naval mission, codenamed Operation Atalanta, fighting Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden.

Well in their defense, it was a French Navy ship. They probably thought they had good odds.

So what happens to the pirates, after they're captured? Are they just sent back to Somalia(with the corrupt government), and just end up doing the same thing that they were doing before?

No on this one their pretty fucked according to what I've read. They attacked an actual Government flagged ship instead of a registered in (example) French ship. Meaning that France owns the ship it's not owned by a private company and registered there . So they can be tried by the French government. We will have to wait and see though as to what they do.

Okay, that's understandable. But what happens in regular circumstances, when they just attack merchant ships?
