PHILADELPHIA — A man who turned in an old artillery shell to police has learned a lesson: Call ahead.

A southwest Philadelphia police district was evacuated after the man brought in a 105 mm projectile for a howitzer.

Police say the 53-year-old man got the shell in 1977 from a friend who was a Marine and kept it in a storage facility since then, and decided to turn it in for safety reasons.

Police Lt. Frank Vanore said the city Bomb Squad was called in and removed the device to a disposal facility.

Vanore said all indications are that the projectile was live.

The man’s name wasn’t released. Police said he is not expected to be charged with any crime for bringing the shell to the police station.

He should have saved it. You gave up a perfect explosive for an IED. Now what will you use when the Chinese invade?
