9/17/2009 - SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations Sept. 16, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles responded to a request for assistance in the Konduz area. Friendly forces were in the area of a known enemy sniper position and requested a show of force to deter enemy aggression. The show of force was conducted with flares expended and was considered successful when no enemy action was noted.

Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons were in the vicinity of Asadabad providing armed overwatch for friendly forces. A request for support was issued when they reported receiving indiscriminate enemy fire in the vicinity of a known enemy position. The F-16 aircraft released precision-guided munitions against the enemy position, destroying the position and terminating enemy fire.

F-15E aircraft were in the air over Asmar, providing overwatch for friendly forces. Friendly forces were working to clear an area when they came under enemy sniper fire and immediately requested assistance to deter the enemy aggression. The point of origin for the sniper fire was confirmed and a precision-guided munition was released on the enemy target, destroying the target and bringing the sniper fire to an end.

There were Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft at Oruzgan providing armed overwatch for friendly forces. When communications broke down between air support and the friendly ground forces, a show of force was performed to deter any enemy aggression until communications were reestablished.

At Asmar, F-15E aircraft were providing armed overwatch for friendly forces. Anti-Afghan forces were observed on the move with rocket-propelled grenade launchers. A precision-guided munition was employed on the anti-Afghan forces.

Thirty Air Force, Navy and coalition intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan.

In total, 63 close-air-support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

In Iraq, 25 Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations. In addition, two Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In total, six-close-air support missions were flown in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt hostile activities.

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Air Force airlift crews flew 135 airlift sorties, delivered 378 short tons of cargo and transported about 3,000 passengers. Airlift included about 145,000 pounds of aerial resupply cargo dropped over Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

On Sept. 15, Air Force HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters and "Guardian Angel" teams transported 15 patients to coalition field hospitals from locations in Afghanistan. Pararescue team members aboard the helicopters located, rescued and began treatment to stabilize patients in the battlefield. The Pave Hawks transported these patients to field hospitals in less time than it takes for a civilian patient to reach emergency care by ambulance in most major cities.

Air Force aerial refueling crews flew 53 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.2 million pounds of fuel to 238 receiving aircraft.
