9/15/2009 - SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Sept. 14, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft responded to a strike request in the Tarin Kowt area. An enemy improvised explosive device manufacturing facility was observed. Coordinates were confirmed, and the aircraft were authorized to deploy precision-guided munitions against the enemy facility in order to destroy a known threat to civilians and friendly forces. The target was destroyed.

Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft were in the vicinity of Chahar Bagh providing armed overwatch for friendly forces. Shows of force were requested to deter any enemy aggression in the area and were deemed a success when there was no enemy fire.

Air Force B-1B Lancer and Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircraft were providing overwatch for friendly forces near Oruzgan. The friendly forces were working to clear an area when they came under enemy small-arms fire and immediately requested a show of force to deter the enemy aggression. As the show of force was performed, an enemy position was noted and confirmed as a spotting position for the enemy forces. Authorization was given to destroy the target with a precision-guided munition. The enemy position was destroyed. More shows of force were requested during a helicopter extraction operation in order to deter enemy aggression during the operation. The shows of force were successful.

There were F-15E aircraft at Asmar providing armed overwatch for friendly forces taking indiscriminant fire from enemy positions. The positions were observed and confirmed. The F-15s successfully targeted the positions with precision-guided munitions. The enemy fire ceased.

Air Force MQ-1B Predator and A-10 aircraft were in the vicinity of Qalat providing armed overwatch for friendly forces when they reported receiving small arms fire from an enemy position located on a ridgeline. Air support was requested when the point of origin for the enemy fire was confirmed. A missile and a precision-guided munition were employed against the enemy target and the target was destroyed.

At Surkhabad, Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet were providing armed overwatch for friendly forces sweeping a road for improvised explosive devices when an enemy machine gun position opened fire on the friendly forces. The point of origin for the enemy machine gun fire was confirmed and a precision-guided munition was released destroying the enemy target. As the friendly forces resumed their search for IEDs, a show of force was conducted to ensure there was no further enemy action.

Oruzgan, Asmar and Now Zad saw shows of force in response to numerous skirmishes between friendly forces and enemy positions during the day. The shows of force in each incident were enough to deter further enemy aggression on the friendly forces.

Pararescue team members aboard located, rescued and began treatment to stabilize patients in the battlefield. The Pave Hawks transported these patients to field hospitals in less time than it takes for a civilian patient to reach emergency care by ambulance in most major cities.

Air Force aerial refueling crews flew 58 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.2 million pounds of fuel to 256 receiving aircraft.
