New weight record set in airdrops

Air Force transports flying over Afghanistan in July set a record for the pounds of cargo airdropped, Air Forces Central figures show.

During July, C-130 and C-17 aircraft dropped 3.8 million pounds of cargo. The previous high was 3.2 million pounds, set in June. So far for 2009, planes have airdropped 13.8 million pounds of supplies, more than was released in all of 2005, 2006 and 2007.

If the current demand for airdrops continues, the Air Force will top 2008’s total of 16.5 million pounds this month.

Reasons for the increase include more ground forces based in remote locations, efforts to reduce the need for ground convoys and more C-130s based inside Afghanistan.
