The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) killed two members of the US 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade instantly on Monday, shredding their armour and throwing their bodies into a canal.
But Sergeant Anthony Zabala, 31, had a lucky escape.
He said: "I turned away and felt rocks in the air as they came over my back. That was it."
The troops, part of a foot patrol, had been advancing painstakingly with metal detectors and bare hands to defuse bombs planted on a rough track in Garmsir district, Helmand Province.
The unit has been in Afghanistan (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/Afghanistan) just months as part of a surge of 21,000 extra US troops sent by President Obama to quell the Taliban insurgency.
IEDs, which are cheap to make and require few personnel to plant, are the deadliest weapons used by Taliban forces in the country.
Six US soldiers have been killed by IEDs in Helmand over the past few days alone.

Seven of the eight British soldiers killed in Helmand last Friday (http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/British-Soldiers-Killed-In-Afghanistan-Have-Not-Died-In-Vain-Taskforce-Helmand-Tells-Sky-News/Article/200907215335900?lpos=World_News_Second_Home_Page_F eature_Teaser_Region_0&lid=ARTICLE_15335900_British_Soldiers_Killed_In_Af ghanistan_Have_Not_Died_In_Vain%2C_Taskforce_Helma nd_Tells_Sky_News), the UK's bloodiest day in combat since the war began, were victims of IEDs.
The roadside bombs have been responsible for the deaths of 36 of the 47 British troops in the country this year.
Currently, around 8,300 British military personnel are serving in Afghanistan - the majority deployed in Helmand.
A total of 184 UK service personnel have died in the conflict since it began in 2001, surpassing the number of lives lost in the war in Iraq.
Forty nations are currently contributing around 50,000 troops to the Nato-led security force in Afghanistan.
