If you’re a machine-gunner, you could be getting new optics soon.
Marine officials announced Wednesday that the Corps has awarded a $33 million contract to Trijicon Inc. to supply new day optics for the M240B medium machine gun. The contract spans five years, with delivery expected to be complete by July 2014.
The announcement comes three months after Corps officials signed a separate $33 million contract with Trijicon to deliver new day optics for the M249 squad automatic weapon.
It was not clear Friday how many M240B optics will be purchased. But Marine officials said in April that the contract for SAW day optics called for about 10,500 units to be purchased — nearly one for every SAW — with fielding planned in early 2010.
Officials with Marine Corps Systems Command, which announced the contract, could not be reached for comment.
The M240B has been equipped with optics in the past, including in the Corps. The Army uses scopes on its machine guns, with the M145 machine gun optic in use by soldiers with both the SAW and the M240B.
