The Remote Guardian System (RGS) is a gun and sensors system for the V-22 Osprey. It has been designed to be stowed in, and deployed from, the existing 'hell hole' access space under the main cabin of the V-22. The RGS therefore does not intrude into the V-22's troop/cargo carrying space and has no drag penalty when retracted. The RGS armament is a 7.62 mm machine gun, with different gun types adopted by the two different (US) users. Marine Corps MV-22 Ospreys will be fitted with the GAU-17 Minigun while Air Force CV-22s will use the GAU-2 Minigun. A complete RGS can be fitted to (or removed from) an Osprey in about six hours. The baseline targeting system is integrated into a three-window ball turret housing separate daylight TV (charged coupled device, CCD) and day/night infra-red sensors, plus a laser range finder. To reduce time and cost the RGS has not been fully integrated into the Osprey's main avionics system and functions as a stand-alone item with its own sensors. The sensor ball is mounted forward of the gun unit, along the centreline of the aircraft. The RGS can track threats within it line of sight at a rate of more than 45°/sec. There is no dedicated operator's station inside the aircraft. Instead, the RGS is controlled by a handheld device (closely resembling a games console joypad) that can be used from any seat in the main cabin. The gun aiming system uses a continuously computer impact point
