American soldier captured in Afghanistan

KABUL — An American soldier, who disappeared after walking off his base in eastern Afghanistan with three Afghan counterparts, is believed captured, officials said Thursday.

Spokeswoman Capt. Elizabeth Mathias said the soldier disappeared Tuesday.

“We understand him to be have been captured by militant forces. We have all available resources out there looking for him and hopefully providing for his safe return,” Mathias said.

Mathias did not provide details on the soldier, the location where he was captured or the circumstances.

The news broke as thousands of Marines launched a major anti-Taliban offensive in southern Afghanistan. The missing soldier was not part of that operation.

“We are not providing further details to protect the soldier’s well-being,” she said.

Afghan Police Gen. Nabi Mullakheil said the soldier went missing in the Mullakheil area of eastern Paktika province, where there is an American base.

The soldier was noticed missing during a routine check of the unit on Tuesday and was first listed as “duty status whereabouts unknown,” a U.S. defense official said on condition of anonymity.

It wasn’t until Thursday that officials said publicly that he was missing and described him as “believed captured.” Details of such incidents are routinely held very tightly by the military as it works to retrieve a missing or captured soldier without giving away any information to captors.

Initial reports indicated that the soldier was off duty at the time he went missing, having just completed a shift, the official said on condition of anonymity because details are still sketchy.

The missing man is an enlisted soldier, and his family has been notified.

Two U.S. defense sources said the soldier “just walked off” post with three Afghan counterparts after he finished working. They said they had no explanation for why he left the base. He was assigned to a combat outpost, one of a number of smaller bases set up by foreign forces in Afghanistan, the officials said.

Zabiullah Mujaheed, a spokesman for the Taliban, could not confirm that the soldier was with any of its forces. A myriad of insurgent groups operate in eastern Afghanistan, and the Taliban is only one of them.

The most important insurgent group operating in that area is known as Haqqani network and is led by Siraj Haqqani, whom the U.S. has accused of masterminding beheadings and suicide bombings.

Fuck I can only see the worse kind of treatment for the poor guy - but seriously why would you go "off base" with two afghanis? even if you trust them.

U.S. soldier sold to Afghan militant clan, official says

Story Highlights
NEW: U.S. searching for missing soldier on Afghanistan-Pakistan border

Taliban commander says soldier captured along with three Afghans
Soldier being held in a safe place, Taliban commander says

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- The American soldier abducted in southeastern Afghanistan is now being held by a notorious militant clan, a senior U.S. military official said.
This soldier and three Afghan soldiers were captured by low-level militants and then quickly "sold" to the clan and network led by warlord Siraj Haqqani -- believed to be deeply involved in the action.
The Haqqanis -- who operate on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border and are well known to the U.S. military -- are assembling shuras, or local councils of leaders, to talk and try to "legitimize" what they have done, the official said.
U.S., Afghan and Pakistani troops are sealing off the area and also are talking to tribal chiefs, village elders and leaders.
They are telling them to "do the right thing and solve this," the official said.
The U.S. military is telling people not to let Haqqani operatives move through their area and to find the American and return him. The military wants to make sure there is "no shelter" for the militants holding him.
"We want to make sure there is no place to hide," the official said.
The soldier, missing since Tuesday, did apparently leave his small outpost on his own with no apparent means of defending himself, and the U.S. military believes a video of him is forthcoming.
The Taliban earlier claimed responsibility for the abduction. The U.S. soldier was kidnapped along with three Afghan soldiers, Taliban commander Mulvi Sangeen said.
The U.S. soldier visited a military post in the Yousaf Khel district in the Paktika province and got drunk, Sangeen said. He was ambushed while returning to his car and was taken to a safe place, Sangeen said.
CNN could not independently verify Sangeen's claims.
A source with the U.S. military denied the claim that the soldier was drunk.
"The Taliban (http://topics.cnn.com/topics/The_Taliban) are known for lying and what they are claiming are not true," the source said.
The soldier's family has been informed, the military said.
CNN's Nic Robertson contributed to this report.

Whoa whoa whoa.... What the hell does this mean? The clans are trying to find ways to "legitimize" his capture? Basically trying to find some red tape that we won't be allowed to cross, or some shit? I don't understand.

If they "legitimize" his capture, does that mean that it would be illegal to rescue him? What the fuck? But it wouldn't surprise me. They try and pull shit like this all the time, and then the media buys into it, because they're fucking stupid.

Well, I hope we find him and get him back safe. As for the hadjis that grabbed him - I hope they get fucked up.

Few details known about soldier’s capture

By Pauline Jelinek - The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — An American soldier is believed being held by the Taliban after he walked off his base in eastern Afghanistan without his body armor and weapon, officials said Thursday.

The military has intercepted communications in which insurgents said they had captured an American, two U.S. officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

Several officials declined to say whether there has been any direct communications with the insurgents or whether any demands had been made for the return of the soldier, who is a private first class. The military was largely silent about details surrounding the kidnapping, believed to be the first such abduction of a U.S. service member in the nearly eight-year-old war.

Officials said there were conflicting reports that the military was trying to sort out, including which Taliban insurgents may be holding him.

“We are not providing further details to protect the soldier’s well-being,” said Capt. Elizabeth Mathias, a spokeswoman in Afghanistan. Officials would not release his name or other details.

“We understand him to have been captured by militant forces,” Mathias said. “We have all available resources out there looking for him and hopefully providing for his safe return.”

U.S. troops were brought in from nearby areas to help with the search, which included helicopters, Afghan Army support and increased use of intelligence gathering resources, officials said.

There was no immediate public claim of responsibility from any insurgent group. But large sweeps of eastern Afghanistan along Pakistan’s border are believed controlled by the Taliban faction known as the Haqqani network, which also operates on the Pakistan side in that nation’s lawless tribal region.

The network is led by warlord Sirajuddin Haqqani, whom the U.S. has accused of masterminding beheadings and suicide bombings, including the July 2008 attack on the Indian Embassy in Kabul that killed some 60 people. The Haqqani group also was linked to an assassination attempt earlier last year on Afghan president Hamid Karzai.

News of the suspected capture broke as thousands of Marines launched a major anti-Taliban offensive in southern Afghanistan. The missing soldier was not part of that operation.

Afghan Police Gen. Nabi Mullakheil said the soldier went missing in eastern Paktika province, where there is an American base operating near the Pakistan border.

The soldier was noticed missing during a routine check of the unit on Tuesday and was first listed as “duty status whereabouts unknown,” a U.S. defense official said on condition of anonymity.

Though he was missing, his body armor and weapon were found on the base, two officials said.

It wasn’t until Thursday that officials said publicly that he was missing and described him as “believed captured.” Details of such incidents are routinely held very tightly by the military as it works to retrieve a missing or captured soldier without giving away any information to captors.

Initial reports indicated that the soldier was off duty at the time he went missing, having just completed a shift, one of the officials said.

Two U.S. defense sources said the soldier “just walked off” post with three Afghans after he finished working. They said they had no explanation for why he left the base.

The missing man is serving in an Army infantry unit, and his family has been notified he is missing.

The unit was assigned to a combat outpost, one of a number of smaller bases set up by foreign forces in Afghanistan, the officials said.

Myriad insurgent groups operate in eastern Afghanistan, and the Taliban is only one of them. Zabiullah Mujaheed, a spokesman for the Taliban, could not confirm that the soldier was with any of their forces.

If the fears of the soldier’s capture are borne out, insurgents could exploit the development by making demands such as a prisoner exchange or use it for propaganda.

A number of civilians have been abducted in Afghanistan, including aid workers and journalists — both foreigners and Afghans.

But the only other service member that officials could recall who had been captured was Petty Officer 1st Class Neil C. Roberts, a 32-year-old Navy SEAL who was captured during a battle.

Roberts fell from a Chinook and was captured and killed by al-Qaida just months after the start of the war, in March 2002. Later, a second helicopter returned under fire and dropped troops near where Roberts fell. Six more Americans died in the fighting
