Basrah SWAT arrests suspected terrorist in southern Iraq

Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO

BAGHDAD – Iraqi police from the Basrah Special Weapons and Tactics team, along with Coalition advisors, arrested a suspected terrorist during an Iraqi-led, early-morning operation in southern Iraq June 23.

The SWAT team was operating under the authority of a warrant issued by a local court in Amarah.

The apprehended individual is suspected of developing and using improvised explosive devices and indirect fire attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces operating in the Maysan Province.

Information acquired from the suspects may reduce the effectiveness of the terrorist network operating in the greater Basrah area, as well as provide information that will lead to the capture of individuals involved in other direct attacks and smuggling networks.

“The success of this operation testifies to the Iraqi Security Forces’ ability to effectively plan and execute operations,” said Maj. Robert Bockholt, a Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force – Arabian Peninsula spokesman. “Once again, the Basrah SWAT team demonstrates their personal commitment to providing a sense of safety, security and stability to the deserving people of Iraq.”
