I had joined in 1978 there where alot of these heli's left from the war. I had seen one hover in a camping parking lot, the passenger in the Egg was my dad's best friend Later on my first shirt
When we had that above us at 50 hovering that is when i fell in love with this bird.
My second encounter with this bird was on tactical training 48hr simulated war maneuvers. I had called in a medvac for a infantry m-60 gunner, who was at the range and did not clear his weapon before leaving the firing position (pulling the charging handle back and opening the breach to see if it was clear) Guys who had to lug 60's had a bad habit of putting the barrel on the tip of there boot and leaning on it this one had a round in it. The round went off ricocheted off the ground, came back up his calf and out his thigh lucky he did not hit anything vital.
The only medvac available was this bird, they put him and the medic in the back and flew the base hospital. He only had 100 ft by 100ft to put it down came into a hover landed, they loaded it up and went straight up with his load The guy lived Everyone involved was called to the hospital by his request, to see the guy who was wounded and he thanked every single one of us for saving his leg.

On another note these guys who flew these birds where nuts who wants to bring and big fat target and make it stand still for target practice, when they flew they where always looking for a fight and alot of the times they found it. But that was there job and they did it well ,alot where lost
RIP for those who did not make it back
