So does the helicopter register it locking on in the beginning or only when it fires?

Unless the missile system is IR laser designated, and this one is not, the missile passively locks on to the exhaust of the helicopter. There is a countermeasure system which uses radar to register a rapidly approaching object. If no radar warning is present at the time, the helicopter system automatically launches flares. Not sure if the aircraft in the video has this system, or if the crew just had their head on a swivel.

Not sure that this one (looks like Mi-8 or Mi-17) had some sophisticated defense system with SAM detection capability. Usually those birds have simple radar detectors (useless against IR guided SAMs) and flare dispensers with manual control. Probably crew was warned from the ground or from other bird.

I believe the alarm goes off with beeps when they're getting "painted", then a solid tone upon lock on.

you could hear barley that the system had was picking up the heat from the exhaust then a lock on with the beep the heli had to have had early detection and seen the launch and shot the flares that was a close one what about another 100 feet the heli would have taken a direct hit
