What's driving the continued skyrocketing gun sales?

It began last October as citizens began to sense that the 2008 elections would bring the most anti-gun partisans to Washington in U.S. history. Their hunch was correct. November of '08 witnessed a sweep into D.C. of Senators, Congressmen, and a President that were all on record supporting strict gun control, many of whom had even supported an outright ban of all handguns in America.
Thus, the great American gun rush ensued in full force.
Citizens by the millions across the land inundated their local gun shops to purchase their goods. They were convinced that their newly-elected government would attempt to strip them of their Constitutional right to self-defense. And they responded by buying up firearms of all kinds.
In the beginning the sales boom was driven by one overriding factor--Americans wanted to buy guns before they were outlawed or restricted so severely that purchasing them would be rendered nearly useless.
But here we are nearly 8 months later, and there is no sign that the great American gun rush is slowing down. In fact, gun sales continue to skyrocket, increasing month by month over the same period last year.
In a report provided by Gun Pundit (http://www.gunpundit.com/3019.php), background checks for citizens seeking to purchase firearms have continued to skyrocket, and May of this year was the busiest month of May ever.
To be sure, the threat of gun bans and the assault on Second Amendment rights still loom large. Congress is controlled by vocal anti-gun proponents. The White House is controlled by an individual who once stated that he wished to ban all handguns in America.
But there is a much deeper at issue at play here, beneath the surface. According to several of my sources among gun owners here in South Carolina in particular, a significant number of Americans who are buying guns are preparing for a potential all-out assault by their government on all of their rights. These Americans are increasingly concerned that the present Administration represents the most significant threat to human liberty and the Constitution that we have ever witnessed in this nation. And many of these have made it abundantly clear that they have no intention of giving up on the most successful experiment in human liberty the world has ever seen. They will fight to preserve it.
The growing movement among many of the several states to affirm the 10th Amendment by passing legislation limiting the scope of the federal government is a perfect illustration of the extent of the concern. Texas, Montana, Tennessee, and a host of other states are thumbing their noses at the federal government, proclaiming in effect that they will tolerate encroachments on the 10th Amendment no more.
And millions of citizens are armed to the hilt waiting for the Feds to attempt an oppressive move.
The question is, is the federal government willing to kill several million U.S. citizens in order to make a point about its all-encompassing power? Or will the Feds back off, realizing that their power comes from the states and the citizens?
