So it is ok to take on Islamic Jihad or Al Qaeda types in Mali (lots of resources in Mali), but not Syria where the hypocrites arm the Jihadi and Al Qaeda types to fight the legitimate government? I mean one mans Jihadi is another's freedom fighter so just what signal are the western nations sending here? I say the wrong one and that Syria and Mali are just steps on a road to an ultimate goal, all driven by the ones who always benefit from others sons dying. We all know who that little country is in the greater region!

So, just a point of detail - these are French Foreign Legionnares, not the Regular French Army guys out there. The French rarely send anybody other than Legionnare to handle their fighting.

These are what the Legion would call "Schlapores", a slang name for regular French army. Derived from a German nickname for a dog with floppy ears, because some French army units have humongous berets. Doubtless some of the units currently serving in Mali were previously stationed in Chad as it is a logical stepping point strategically. Units of the legion do regular company sized rotations in 4 month increments in Chad splitting their time between N'Djemena and Abeche. But so do the French regulars. Its an on going operation called "Epervier".

For those who only know FFL... "regular" army has been engaged in large numbers in all french operations since forever. Actually, most of the troops posted in Africa are Marines troops aka "Colonials". Their historical mission is to deploy.
