Chief Paul Williams said multiple Springfield police officers have been placed on administrative leave while an investigation continues.
Williams said this afternoon at a press conference that officers attempted to pull over a pickup truck early Friday morning for not having license plates.
The driver fled and the truck was eventually wrecked and abandoned near the 700 block of N. West Ave., police say.
Police followed footprints to 2506 West Grand Street and secured the scene. They later obtained a search warrant, Williams said.
At some point during the execution of the warrant, Williams said, a gunman emerged and began shooting.
Differing from earlier police accounts, Williams said a single gun battle began inside the home and ended — with the shooter’s death — outside the home.
Earlier accounts were that two separate gun battles took place at the home.
Williams identified Det. Travis Wilson as the officer who was shot in the right side of his back. An earlier spokesperson described the wound as a “graze.”
Two people were detained at the scene, questioned and have since been released, Williams said.
Williams said each officer who fired a shot was place on administrative leave — standard protocol in fatal shootings.http://www.apacheclips.com/boards/vbtube/images/play_thread.png (http://www.apacheclips.com/boards/vbtube_show.php?tubeid=2676)
