These guys were Iraqi militia. On the video they mentioned volunteers but this was part of the US strategy to counter insurgency. These guys were paid equipped and supported deputy sheriffs if you will of the US armed forces. They were majority Shiite Muslims being paid to seek revenge on a common enemy. Sunni Muslims were powerful under Saddam's Baathist Party and would kidnap the relatives of the guys in the videos and kill them.
