Its OK saying "...not something to be proud of." I agree. However the cost in human life of an invasion of the Japanese home islands would have been way more costly in human life. Incidentally, while the two bombs are often erroneously considered to have ended the Pacific war. It was actually the Soviet invasion of Manchuria that broke the camels back. The Japanese considered Manchuria as a part of Japan proper and with the presence of foreign troops...defeat.

The US should have dropped one on Tokyo and killed the war criminal Hiroheto
Japan has never really been held accountable for the truelly evil acts it soliders committed

I hate to disagree with ripcord but wars up to that time was about killing the populus of a country. to demoralize them so bad they lost the will to fight. Those soldiers had families to and when you go for the families the soldier looses the will to fight. Its nothing to be proud of your right but what it is is life and life is a bitch and then you die. And im sure if it was your family or theirs that had to die you would pick theirs...not a moral decision just a human one.

@Kiwi68 The reason they did not A bomb Tokyo is Tokyo had sustained SERIOUS damage from NATO bombing already, and they wanted to test it on a couple of cities with little damage and large factories making shit for the war.

Do you think it was more the soviets are on or homeland lets give up. Those are the rules once someone sets foot onto our homeland we will surrender to them. Or Fuck me if we don't surrender now those fuckers are gonna take us out one huge bomb at a time!

The scary thing is the A-Bomb didn't cause the most casualties... for a single bomb, yes, but the largest loss of life was due to incendiary bomb runs that burned entire cities to the ground, along with the ppl

No one in their right mind is proud of this. It is what had to happen. That war would undoubtedly have proved costlier if the decision had not been made. Does anyone think this was not a very, very heavy decision to make? Taking Manchuria into account, THIS was the unstoppable force that Japan and Hirohito knew they had no answer for.

Of course, what they didn't know, was that we had no more refined and enriched uranium with which to build devices #4 and later, at the time.
