Man those howitzers are beasts, crazy to think in ww1 both sides were under this kinda bombardment for months on end. And surprisingly they had bigger guns and shells back them, even a 155's got nothing on the average railway artillery piece. just watched a good doc...

Airburst shells use a "proximity fuze" which is controlled by a doppler radar device or timer within the shell that causes it to explode when near the target. Sounds complicated.
