Great footage. Survive 25 missions and you got a pass to go home.

Cannot imagine the horror if your bomber got hit and heading downward scrambling to bail.

Most of the German Fighters did not shoot those who parachuted out.

The European Air War was the western allies bloodiest battle with well over 100,000 deaths between the RAF and USAAF. Each one of those B17's has 10 men and a parachute was no guarantee as the force of centrifuge of a spiraling aircraft would pin the crews in place. You were lucky to bail. Also most German fighters carried at least one 30mm cannon with each shell carrying the explosive force of an offensive hand grenade. While the B17 looks big it was actually quite cramped inside, so when you see footage like this of cannon shells piercing the fuselage you can bet your bottom dollar men are being sliced and diced inside.
