Young cannabis smokers run risk of lower IQ, report claimsBy Dominic HughesHealth correspondent, BBC Newshttp://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/62479000/jpg/_62479741_m3710032-view_of_a_man_smoking_a_cannabis_joint-spl.jpgCannabis is the most widely used illegal drug in the world

Young people who smoke cannabis run the risk of a significant and irreversible reduction in their IQ, research suggests.
The findings come from a study of around 1,000 people in New Zealand.
An international team found those who started using cannabis below the age of 18 - while their brains were still developing - suffered a drop in IQ.
A UK expert said the research might explain why people who use the drug often seem to under-achieve.
For more than 20 years researchers have followed the lives of a group of people from Dunedin in New Zealand.
They assessed them as children - before any of them had started using cannabis - and then re-interviewed them repeatedly, up to the age of 38.
Having taken into account other factors such as alcohol or tobacco dependency or other drug use, as well the number of years spent in education, they found that those who persistently used cannabis suffered a decline in their IQ.
The more that people smoked, the greater the loss in IQ.

It is such a special study that I'm fairly confident that cannabis is safe for over-18 brains, but risky for under-18 brains”
Professor Terrie MoffittInstitute of Psychiatry, King's College London
The effect was most marked in those who started smoking cannabis as adolescents.
For example, researchers found that individuals who started using cannabis in adolescence and then carried on using it for years showed an average eight-point IQ decline.
Stopping or reducing cannabis use failed to fully restore the lost IQ.
The researchers, writing in the US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (http://www.pnas.org/), found that: "Persistent cannabis use over 20 years was associated with neuropsychological decline, and greater decline was evident for more persistent users."
"Collectively, these findings are consistent with speculation that cannabis use in adolescence, when the brain is undergoing critical development, may have neurotoxic effects."
One member of the team, Prof Terrie Moffitt of King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, said this study could have a significant impact on our understanding of the dangers posed by cannabis use.
"This work took an amazing scientific effort. We followed almost 1,000 participants, we tested their mental abilities as kids before they ever tried cannabis, and we tested them again 25 years later after some participants became chronic users.

There are a lot of clinical and educational anecdotal reports that cannabis users tend to be less successful in their educational achievement, marriages and occupations”
Professor Robin MurrayInstuitute of Psychiatry, King's College London
"Participants were frank about their substance abuse habits because they trust our confidentiality guarantee, and 96% of the original participants stuck with the study from 1972 to today.
"It is such a special study that I'm fairly confident that cannabis is safe for over-18 brains, but risky for under-18 brains."
Robin Murray, professor of psychiatric research, also at the King's College London Institute of Psychiatry but not involved in the study, said this was an impressive piece of research.
"The Dunedin sample is probably the most intensively studied cohort in the world and therefore the data are very good.
"Although one should never be convinced by a single study, I take the findings very seriously.
"There are a lot of clinical and educational anecdotal reports that cannabis users tend to be less successful in their educational achievement, marriages and occupations.
"It is of course part of folk-lore among young people that some heavy users of cannabis - my daughter callers them stoners - seem to gradually lose their abilities and end up achieving much less than one would have anticipated. This study provides one explanation as to why this might be the case.
"I suspect that the findings are true. If and when they are replicated then it will be very important and public education campaigns should be initiated to let people know the risks."

I am also going to get cancer from any type of food I eat, from smoking, drinking, using a cell phone. Doesn't matter it's all the same. Unless we ban alcohol, there is no reason for pot to be illegal. The US would actually benefit financially if it were to legalize pot. I am a personal believer in legalizing everything, I don't really care what other people do with their lives and quite frankly I don't know any better than them.

That being said, I would never touch any of it. I sure as hell support anyones choice to use whatever they want. After all I get drunk on a regular basis so who am I to judge what others do. Plus I'm not god.

This is exactly why it needs to be legal. I'm not a fan of the stuff, alcohol is my poison but They need to legalise it and undercut the criminal market through more effective and safer means of production. Make it so people have to buy this stuff from a licensed place (like the much more dangerous drug, our friend alcohol). Dealers don't ask for I'D or care about kids, licenced premises would.

"Poor awareness" ? No shit, kids need to learn the facts about all drugs in school not just the usual bullshit of "drugs are bad mmm k" then actually "learn" from their friends and local dealer who swears drugs are fine!

Legalizing all drugs is the only logical end to this bullshit failed "war on drug's". The social, economic and personal freedom benefits would be 100x better than what we currently have.

yeah i have said I dont care who does what as long as they dont fuck with my family and stay away. The issue I have is of course these people who claim the drug is harmless. If it was legal and people smoked it in the park sitting next to you and your young children would you give a shit? I sure as shit would. It is just like cigarettes I dont want some chain smoker polluting my kids lungs because they are a victim of the tobacco nazis.

Otherwise smoke and drug as you wish in your home and on your land. I drink alcohol from time to time and so that constitutes I am no good to preach to others to be drug free and healthy. I dont drive drunk and think those who go out and do should get the death penalty if they kill someone while drunk.

Otherwise I just posted this for fair and balanced reporting as this is from BBC and not some American war on drugs outlet.

Eagle, Eagle...

This study is garbage. Look at it....

Also, the UK & American Gov are the same when it comes to the war on cannabis.
They also said weed consumption....turns you 'Gay'....how about that one?

You should drop the paranoia. Your family doctor could be under the influence of drugs and you wouldn't even know.

The truth of the matter is.....Republicans, Teachers, and bad schools limit the IQ in young students.
Common sense would tell you anything used in excess is harmful to the human mind and body.
Look at the harm that High Fructose Corn Syrup does...

LOL yes teachers who are predominately democrat do hurt our childrens IQ I agree. I have had run ins with my kids teachers and at the rate they are doing drugs our country will be equal with ethiopia and their education system soon enough.

My question to you Eagle is this......
What are you going to do about it? How are you going to improve things for your children and your grandchildren?

Posting on the internet will make zero difference.
Scum and drugs have been on this earth longer than you have.

Florida is doomed. The quicker you realize this the better off you will be.
I hope you are prepared to leave when TSHTF.

You are a MINORITY in every aspect. You will be the first one targeted

You have much greater things to worry about.

I wouldn't worry about a bum smoking a J at the park.
I'd rather put up with that than watching junkies shooting heroin laying in their own piss and vomit.
That is what I have to see when I go to the fucking park.

I am ready for war. I understand those who do drugs to counter their medical problems. Despite all that I have my own problems and dont use more than a tylenol and deal with pain everyday. I dont trust medicine or drs anymore. Look up Cipro its poison and its being prescribed still today it was given to me and I took it. i am hoping that my symptoms dont get worse. As it is right now when our civilization fails and shit hits the fan I will pay a visit to the Dr that gave me that script and put a 308 thru his forehead.

IQ isn't all that
and the validity of the tests are debatable
what does this study say? "giving developing kids stuff, F's them up"
well hell its a shorter list if you write down what doesn't effect developing kids. (the human brain isn't fully developed until age 25)

and yea the number of idiot teachers out weights the rational.
(my old consumer ed teacher said the government uses (ad)Cookies to track everything you do, LOL what a retard)

and i agree these republicans pushing this Intelligent Design(Creationism) are screwing people up.

This is just silly. They wasted time and money and actually paid [presuming they are anything like the US medical field that has to pay test subjects] pot smokers only to prove what was common sense.

"Collectively, these findings are consistent with speculation that cannabis use in adolescence, when the brain is undergoing critical development, may have neurotoxic effects."

NO WAY! You mean taking in a foreign substance while your brain is developing can hurt you? Jeeze I thought everything would be cool... Fucking hell. What a waste of a study. There are so many things out there that deserve this time and effort more than "what happens to people when they smoke pot" Who the fuck cares. Take lessons by examples from other countries and the data out there that cannabis IS helping people medically and legalize it already, and spend some time working on something else like Alzheimers disease or autism or stem cell research or DNA mapping.

What a joke. It's always about politics. Why can't science just be about science? My brother is a biochemist and he has to deal with this political bullshit all the time. "Oh sorry, I know that experiment your lab has been working on is close to being done and productive, but it isn't really relevant to 'popular' science right now so we won't give you any funding"

Fucking silly and wasteful.

sorry eagle but your anti drugs knee jerk reaction was a bit premature and reactionary ..

cannabis + idiot = giggling idiot
cannabis + intellect = creative paradigm..
cannabis isn't the problem.. over stimulated idiots are the problem..
DON'T BELIEVE THE BBC HYPE..
the report was used as government propaganda in coalition with the BBC to surreptitiously target the british youth, AGAIN
the austerity agenda the government is pushing as of late, is a stigma towards unemployment and benefit scrounging,
(young idol pot smokers are to blame for the shitty economy. and as another example of government sociological manipulation..the government has promised to cut down on disability benefit fraud, as a consequence of these misdirected retorical decree's, attacks by the public on the disabled have risen by 70%) (of the 1% of the disabled population. 0.5 % of these are thought to be fraudulent claimants)
also the incomparable IQ findings of 1000 selected test NZ subjects are without merit..
(NZ average IQ is 100.... therefore a perfect example of 'The Flynn effect' being manipulated to suit a purpose) .. look it up for yourself ;)
ITS ALL LIES..

Like I said I really dont care about the report and I actually did think Europe was more socialist and pro drugs. I think the problem you are talking about isnt related to weed as much as government socialized healthcare. Beating up disabled people who are a drain on the social healthcare system seems redundant to me. "Lets see this fucker is in a wheel chair and needs an oxygen tank to breath lets go fuck him up some more and add some more cost to the system. "

Thanks but it sounds like something our brilliant Americans and obama cult need to hear about. It is just a complete failure in the making. Greece is no different than any other socialist country. France is going to tax the rich right out of their country and that will fix their economy right?

I just dont get it with all these socialist cheerleaders its robbing Peter to pay Paul.
