This was mass production on a HUGE scale!!http://www.apacheclips.com/boards/vbtube/images/play_thread.png (http://www.apacheclips.com/boards/vbtube_show.php?tubeid=184)

The B-24 in its VLR (Very Long Range) variant helped close the Mid-Atlantic gap.

I'm reading A Higher Call: An Incredible True Story of Combat and Chivalry in the War-Torn Skies of World War II.... According to Charlie Brown the B-24 was initially looked at as a death machine due to how little surface area was on the wings... it was a temperamental aircraft to fly and very unforgiving.
This video also talks about how much testing was done.... women flew them from the plant to their airbase (known as WASPs) and most were simply started up to make sure the engines ran and that was it... the women were the first actual pilots of these birds, not knowing if they'd stay in the sky. Production was too fast to test all aircraft properly.
