Thirty years ago today (Friday) the Royal Navy suffered one of its worst losses of the Falklands War.
On this day in 1982 an Argentine Exocet missile sank the destroyer HMS Sheffield with the loss of 20 lives as fires raged out of control... many of the crew suffered horrific burns.
The French-made missile penetrated deep into HMS Sheffield's control room, creating a poisonous smoke and forcing most of the crew to abandon ship.
A major rescue operation was launched in the South Atlantic, with relatives thousands of miles back in the UK waiting for news of their loved ones.
The 4,100-ton destroyer had been on a scouting mission off the Falkland Islands when it was hit by one of two missiles fired by a Super-Etendard fighter bomber.
It came the day after the sinking of the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano.
