The latest of the Royal Navy's powerful new Type 45 destroyers has been formally welcomed into the fleet at a ceremony in Portsmouth.

HMS Dragon is the fourth of six Type 45 destroyers being built for the Navy.

Hundreds of guests including families of the 190 crew of HMS Dragon attended the colourful "Christening" ceremony at Portsmouth Naval Base.

The hour-long ceremony was rounded off in traditional Royal Navy fashion with the cutting of a commissioning cake.

Performing that honour was Commanding Officer Darren Houston's wife, Liesl, and 18 year old Engineering Technician Mark Soldiew - the youngest member of the ship's company.

All six of the new Type 45s are due to be in service by the middle of the decade.

Nice looking ship.
Sometimes I wish I went Navy instead of Air Force.

Looks a lot like the new destroyers USN has.
