Falklands veteran back in Vulcan cockpit
12 April 2012 | Falkland Islands
Flight Lieutenant Martin Withers, who completed the RAF's longest ever bombing run to attack the runway at Port Stanley at the start of the Falklands War, is to return to the Vulcan's cockpit.
It's for a flypast at the National Memorial Arboretum next month, when the conflict's 30th anniversary will be commemorated.
He and his crew flew 8,000 miles across the Atlantic, refuelling in mid-air before the bombing run, under heavy enemy fire.
The raid meant the Argentinians couldn't launch any air strikes from the islands.
Flight Lieutenant Withers was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross for his part in the mission.
