Falklands veteran back in Vulcan cockpit
12 April 2012 | Falkland Islands

Flight Lieutenant Martin Withers, who completed the RAF's longest ever bombing run to attack the runway at Port Stanley at the start of the Falklands War, is to return to the Vulcan's cockpit.

It's for a flypast at the National Memorial Arboretum next month, when the conflict's 30th anniversary will be commemorated.

He and his crew flew 8,000 miles across the Atlantic, refuelling in mid-air before the bombing run, under heavy enemy fire.

The raid meant the Argentinians couldn't launch any air strikes from the islands.

Flight Lieutenant Withers was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross for his part in the mission.

Last airworthy Vulcan back in the skies
27 April 2012 | England UK Last airworthy Vulcan back in the skies

Bad weather did not stop the last remaining airworthy Vulcan bomber taking to the skies this week.

It comes after months of preparations for the 60th anniversary of the first Vulcan flight on 30 August 1952.

The aircraft took off at Robin Hood Airport for a successful 90-minute test flight.

Vulcan XH558, which was based at RAF Waddington, served in the Falklands Conflict in 1982 as part of the Black Buck raids bombing Port Stanley airfield.
