im after some training ideas or tips to do before going away to recruit training.

what im planning on doing soon is to chuck some heavy stuff in a bag and go walk for a few km's out in national park near my house.

i know for the aus ARTC there is a thing called the challenge which is a 8km march with pack and rifle, doing exercises along the way and after the march out. then marching back again. what would be some good training to prepare for this?

If it's an 8k march try and mimic it as much as possible, but instead of doing 8k in practice do 10k or 12k. If you get used to more then less will be easier. Also doing sprints to get yourself ready from the cardio aspect, sprint 50m just 50m sprint 50 jog 50. Do that for 30 or 40 minutes 3 times a week. Also customize your pack as much as you can, adjust everything and try different methods, until you find the absolute right fit and wear for you.
